She is currently teaching as honorary assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb.

Luciano Basauri (Santiago, Chile, 1972) studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Central University of Chile where he worked later as an assistant professor. He made his postgraduate studies at the Berlage Institute, Amsterdam where he graduated with the work 'Memory inc.' in 2000. He has contributed in several articles sounding matters of memory and sampling techniques in the creation of suburbia and of infrastructure and its potential to host emerging patterns of urban behavior as means of intervention in architectural design. He exhibited his work at the Witte de With Rotterdam, NAI Rotterdam, Town Hall Almere and Berlage Institute Amsterdam. After working in Chile and The Netherlands he is currently living in Croatia.

NETWORK AS ART_AS CULTURE AS METAPHORE

TUTOR: Don Foresta (Paris)

foresta@wanadoo.fr - www.mmmarcel.org

Don Foresta is presently Senior Research Fellow at the Wimbledon School of Art under a three-year research fellowship from the Arts and Humanities Research Board in the UK and professor of interactive multimedia art at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Arts in the Paris area. He is a specialist in art and science and has organised several conferences and events in the field as well as publications on the question of the interface between the two.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Foresta graduated in 1961 from the University of Buffalo with a BA in American History and Government. The same year he entered the US Foreign Service and served in diplomatic posts in Africa, Washington, and finally Paris, France. In 1971 he received his Master's Degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and his doctorate, summa cum laude, in Communication Science from the University of Paris 2 - the Sorbonne.

From 1971 to 1976 he served as Director of the American Cultural Center in Paris. He left the Foreign Service with a Rockefeller Foundation grant to make his first television program for PBS in a series developed with video artist Nam June Paik. He created the video art department at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in 1976, specializing in the use of video as a means of creative personal expression. He founded a private company, International Media Consultants, to organize projects of artistic, cultural and educational exchange through the new media and advanced communications technologies.

…I' am doing something around the idea of the network as well as something on art and science. I am deeply involved in both topics and all my work revolves around the two.

You can see what I am doing with the network at www.mmmarcel.org.

I am building a high band-width network for artistic experimentation, an attempt to claim a part of the high speed networks being put in place for art. We can get into that to the degree that you have the possibility to connect. If that is not possible, we can simulate the network and get into the fundamental idea of it. For a title I would suggest, "The Network - as art, as culture, as metaphor". I can approach it from many sides, as a tool, as a operational or schematic model, as a philosophical idea, as a metaphor for western civilization, etc. I also get into elements of it's geometry which is fractal. All that can be accompanied by images and examples.

Connected to the network idea is the interface between art and science. This is something that interests me very much.

PICTURES IN THE HEAD

Ayca Ince (Istanbul)

AYCA INCE - THE TUTOR FORM TURKEY

I did my undergraduate in Urban and Regional Planning department. That was the time when I had attended various workshops* and competitions** and had a chance to discover the fascinating and `ego` improving tool> `urban design`.
But as I dwell into real time challenges after those colorful experiments, I have recognized the need theory and its dept.
So I have decided to continue my way instead of being an urban designer/planner, as a social scientist. Then I started my Masters degree in sociology, as well as my new position in Humanities and Social Sciences department of Istanbul Technical University.
That academic work as a research assistant which is still continuous, lead me in a way to draw my path in the interdisciplinary filed, now that I believe as `no limits do exist between sciences. and thus supported me on my way to get a scholarship and start a new masters program so called: `Cities, Space and Society` in London School of Economics. Now I am back to Istanbul after a one-year experience in London, too heavily inspired.
If you ask me what I had studied there, I worked on `cultural industries, and their spatial effect on urban form`, and submitted a dissertation on `the last 20 years of music industry in Istanbul`.
I am still looking for my way and this search seems to be continuous for the next few decades. But on one side I believe that all these chains will come together and form a complete product in the end.

It has been a year that I am back from London and since then I am too much involved in the cultural life of Istanbul, especially in the music scene-watching live performances, writing about them, and working for a music publishing company part time.
I am taking to modern dance and Tai chi courses. And touring my city as if I had never been here before.

THE VANE

Darko Polic (Novi Sad)

I was born in Novi Sad 9.II 1975; Have finished both primary and secondary school in the city of birth. I have finished Faculty of Architecture on University in Belgrade this year. During the studies I have been discovering and developing my interest of urban remodulation & reconstruction. One of my student works was dedicated to spreading pedestrian area of Novi Sad toward Danube reconstructing vested space of old Fish market. I took a part in an architectural competition for city center of small town of Bogatic in central Serbia. We won the first prize there.
I was also a member of Student Expedition 1998 in city of Perast in the bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska). We have tried to observe and use old abandoned baroque palaces and small city spaces for new purpose, or made them new points of a new city net we adopted…
In my final theses I tried to recycle vested spaces in the city center of Novi Sad. Actually it was a try to fit huge white marble fortress (National theater) into miller of small Central European town, creating small city spaces around.
Other things that could represent me better is my total dedication to Choir singing in a free time.
I'm very interested in checking my approaches and attitudes in urban remodelation in city of Vis! Analyzing and sketching preferences of topography, the sea and inherited architecture will lead to scanning the situation and could lead to various responses. Response depend of our senses and sensibility we bring with us or one we will accept through mutual meetings, conversation or just stepping out from the ferry and begin to communicate to the island of Vis.

- about previous work-
i am a trained and practicing painter and professor of drawing and painting.
over the last six years i have been studying and teaching digital media...and in
the last two have been producing artworks via digital--aka "new media" means.
the work i make with digital media is concerned with effecting a type of sensory experience
for the viewer/participant by creating a immersive cinematic experience.

i am currently working on a three part piece called "axisMundi". the first part
of which is being created from the 16 hours of raw digital footage shot while in cuba

wearing a odd device of my own design that mounts two digital cameras (one
suspended in front of me and one behind me on "steady" cam rigs) i am walking
"grids" through particular cities. havana--berlin--florence--

each walk generates about 15-20 hours of raw DV footage...from which the final
"works" are generated.

Nathan Hankla
Currently Nathan is a senior New Media Major with an Anthropology minor.
He has worked on several large scale information design projects at ASAP
Media Services, including the School of Marine Sciences web site. His
focus is in creating intuitive layouts that focus on the content and not
on the construction of a project. He is both a talented designer and a
good guy to have a beer with , much like President Bush.

Andrija Suic (Dragodid),
Dini Renic (Zagreb), Filip Bubalo (Split)

Dini Renic
Born in Split, on 6. 8. 1978. He attended elementary school in Zagreb. In 1993, he enlisted in the nautical secondary school in Mali Losinj, and that same year transferred in the Archiepiscopal Classical Gymnasium in Zagreb. In 1997, he enrolled to Croatian Studies, his major being history. Right now, he's in his final year. He's currently working at the Croatian Restoration Institute. In 1989, he attended and finished a sculpting course. Since 1994, he's into free climbing and rock climbing; he was a member of the Mountain Rescue Service from 1996 until 2000. He lives in Zagreb, owns two retriever Labradors, and they own him as well.

Filip Bubalo

Born in Split, on 31. 8. 1978. After he had finished elementary school and secondary Construction School - geodetic course, he went to Zagreb and enrolled into Faculty of Civil Engineering (geodesy). After a short time, he enrolled into Croatian studies, his major being history, and he is now in his final year. Two years ago, he enrolled into undergraduate study of museology on the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, where he's currently preparing his graduation thesis (its subject being ecology - museums as cybernetic forms of institutions). That would, in the form of this year's Dragodid workshop, enable more understanding, and in that way take care and protection - that is, revitalise endangered entities, of which there are quite a few at Vis.
